Modification and inspection requirements

Vehicles may require modifications in order to comply with Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (CMVSS). Before you import a vehicle from the United States, determine what modifications your vehicle may require.

Modifications and the associated cost are the responsibility of the importer. Please note that some manufacturers require that an authorized dealer perform the modifications before they will issue a recall clearance document. We recommend that you contact the vehicle manufacturer or an authorized dealer to determine the cost and availability of parts for required modifications.

Select a vehicle type to find examples of the most common modifications which may apply. Modifications must be completed before the RIV inspection. Visit Transport Canada’s List of Vehicles Admissible from the United States for additional details.
